Tomatoes are among the most important horticultural products in Romania, holding a major share in domestic consumption. According to INS data, tomato production exceeded 720,000 tons in 2024, up 5% compared to the previous year.
Annual per capita consumption is around 36 kg, but Romania remains dependent on imports during the off-season, mainly from Turkey and the Netherlands. The value of tomato imports exceeded €150 million in 2024, highlighting the need to strengthen domestic production.
Trends for 2025 indicate growing demand for organic tomatoes and traditional varieties, valued for their taste and quality. At the same time, urban consumers are increasingly turning toward sustainably packaged products and short supply chains.
For farmers, the major challenges remain high production costs, lack of storage infrastructure, and the pressure of external competition. Solutions include investments in modern greenhouses, the expansion of irrigation systems, and the strengthening of cooperatives for a stronger market presence.
