Peppers Remain a Staple Vegetable in Romania

Peppers are among the favorite vegetables of Romanians, being used both for fresh consumption and in the canning industry. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS), Romania’s pepper production reached approximately 250,000 tons in 2024, an increase of 6% compared to the previous year.

Average annual consumption is around 11 kg per capita, with seasonal peaks during the summer months. In the off-season, Romania imports peppers mainly from Spain and the Netherlands, with imports exceeding 40 million euros in 2024.

Recent trends show increased interest in peppers grown in modern greenhouses, which ensure constant production throughout the year. The organic segment and traditional varieties are also gaining ground, being preferred by urban consumers.

For farmers, the main challenges remain the high energy costs for greenhouse heating and competition from imports. Investments in energy-efficient technologies and access to European funds can support the development of the sector.
