Auchan Romania Accelerates Transition to Green Energy: Aiming for 100% Renewable Use by 2030
Auchan Romania is accelerating its transition to green energy, with the goal of reducing store energy consumption by 40% and using 100% renewable energy by 2030. The company aims to reach a level of 60% green energy use in the consumption of 30 Auchan and ATAC stores, as well as its headquarters, by the end of this year. This will be achieved through a mix of energy from existing photovoltaic panels and purchases made via Auchan Renewable Energy (ARE).
The shift toward green energy builds on a solid path started back in 2022, when, amid the energy crisis and in line with its decarbonization strategy, Auchan Romania implemented a wide range of measures to reduce energy consumption. These actions led to a 20% decrease in the company’s overall energy usage through solutions with both short- and medium-term impact.
As part of this effort, the retailer established Auchan Renewable Energy (ARE) at the beginning of 2023. This company purchases and supplies energy for Auchan locations. Currently, 30 Auchan and ATAC stores across 11 cities, along with the headquarters in Bucharest, are powered through ARE, and by year-end, 60% of this energy will come from renewable sources. Moreover, 16 stores are already equipped with photovoltaic panels, which generated over 8 million kWh in 2024 alone.
“Switching to renewable energy is a complex endeavor, supported both by installing photovoltaic panels across the network and by the operations of our company, Auchan Renewable Energy, which handles energy trading for Auchan locations. Together, these initiatives significantly contribute to reducing our carbon footprint and increasing the company’s energy independence. In the future, we plan to develop additional projects, including installing electric vehicle charging stations,” stated Cristian Drăghici, Director of Auchan Renewable Energy.
In 2024, Auchan Romania continued to implement strategic measures to reduce environmental impact, with significant results in energy consumption and emissions. Through integrated actions in operational efficiency and logistics optimization, the company managed to reduce emissions from electricity consumption by over 50%, those from natural gas, fuels, and refrigerants by 28%, and emissions from goods transport by 18%.
