Romanian aged cheeses represent a high-potential segment on the European market, but one that remains underexploited. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR), exports of Romanian cheeses increased by 10% in 2024, yet their share remains below 5% of total dairy exports.

The European premium market values authenticity, quality, and the story behind the product, and Romania holds an advantage through its long-standing tradition in cheese production. Quality schemes such as PDO and PGI can open access to premium markets, but the number of Romanian products registered under these labels remains limited. “European consumers are looking for products with clear identity and origin, and aged cheeses from Romania can meet this demand,” said a European Commission expert.

The major obstacles are the lack of promotion and the fragmentation of production, but solutions exist: cooperation between farms, national branding, and access to European promotion programs. If these tools are properly applied, Romanian aged cheeses can become a benchmark product on the European premium market.
