Turkey meat is perceived as a healthy option due to its low fat content and high protein value. According to INS data, the average annual per capita consumption of turkey meat in Romania reached 6 kg in 2024, an increase of 8% compared to the previous year.
Domestic turkey meat production is still modest, covering approximately 60% of demand, with the rest supplied through imports from Hungary and Poland. The value of turkey meat imports exceeded 40 million euros in 2024.
On the Romanian market, the premium segment (organic turkey, clean-label processed products) is gaining more and more ground, especially in major cities. At the same time, restaurants and HoReCa chains are promoting menus based on turkey meat.
For farmers, expanding turkey production represents an opportunity for diversification, and accessing European funds for specialized farms can support the development of this niche sector.
