Rabbit meat is considered one of the healthiest protein options, due to its low fat content and high nutritional value. According to FAO, rabbit meat has an average of 135 kcal/100 g, compared to 250 kcal/100 g for beef, containing only 4–5% fat.
It is an excellent source of complete proteins, B-complex vitamins, and minerals such as phosphorus and potassium. Rabbit meat is also easily digestible, making it recommended for children, the elderly, and patients with metabolic disorders.
In Romania, the rabbit farming sector is still modest, but there is significant potential for development. According to INS data, annual rabbit meat production reached approximately 3,000 tons in 2024, most of which was destined for the domestic market.
The growing interest in healthy eating and diversifying protein sources creates opportunities for expanding this niche segment. Through investments in specialized farms and promotional efforts, rabbit meat can become a more visible product on both the Romanian and European markets.
