Poultry meat represents the main segment of Romania’s meat industry, both in terms of production volumes and per capita consumption. According to Eurostat, Romania ranks among the top 10 European producers, with over 1.3 million tons of poultry meat produced in 2024.

Data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS) show that Romanians consume on average 28 kg of poultry meat per year, accounting for nearly half of total meat consumption. However, alignment with European regulations—including animal welfare and food safety standards set out under Regulation (EU) No 2017/625—remains a challenge. In 2024, ANSVSA reported non-compliance in more than 15% of rearing and slaughtering units, particularly concerning biosecurity.

FAO highlights that global demand for poultry meat is increasing, as it is considered a more sustainable source compared to red meat, yet the pressure on Romanian farmers is intensifying. “Compliance with European standards is essential for access to external markets and for maintaining consumer confidence domestically,” stated a representative of MADR. Romanian processors need to make additional investments in digitalization, traceability, and quality control to meet European requirements.

At the same time, Romania’s opportunity lies in consolidating its position on the regional market through certified and sustainable products. The future of the poultry meat industry depends on the ability to balance strong domestic demand with the increasingly stringent requirements of European legislation.
