Pork remains the most consumed source of animal protein in Romania, accounting for 46% of total meat consumption, according to INS data for 2024. The average annual per capita consumption was 37 kg, marking a slight increase compared to the previous year.
Domestic production covers about 70% of market needs, with the remainder supplied through imports, mainly from Germany and Spain. The value of pork imports exceeded €600 million in 2024, reflecting a significant dependence on external markets.
Recent trends show growing demand for processed pork products with reduced salt and fat content. The premium segment, based on traditional products and clean labels, is expanding and gaining consumer trust.
For farmers and processors, future prospects depend on farm modernization, product diversification, and compliance with European regulations on animal welfare and sustainability. These directions can contribute to enhancing the sector’s competitiveness on the European market.
