Beef has a modest share in the diet of Romanians, with an average annual consumption of approximately 7 kg per capita in 2024, compared to the European Union average of 10–11 kg.

Domestic production was around 180,000 tons, insufficient to cover demand, so Romania imported over 50,000 tons of beef, worth approximately 200 million euros. The main source markets are Poland, Italy, and Germany, which supply premium beef, including from specialized breeds.

The HoReCa segment and urban consumers are the main drivers of growing demand for high-quality beef, while the rest of the market remains oriented toward processed meat and affordable products.

For Romanian farmers, developing specialized breeds and integrating into cooperatives could provide a competitive advantage. Accessing European funds and expanding family farms into premium segments are necessary steps to reduce the deficit.

In the long term, consolidating the domestic market and promoting exports can turn beef into a sector with potential for Romania.
