Beef has a modest share in Romanian consumption, averaging around 7 kg per capita annually, according to INS 2024, compared with the EU average of 10–11 kg.
Domestic production has remained at approximately 180,000 tonnes, while beef imports exceeded 50,000 tonnes in 2024, with a total value of €200 million.
The premium segment is gaining popularity, supported by restaurants and consumers willing to pay for high-quality products, but the majority of the market is dominated by processed meat.
For farmers, the main challenges are high feed costs, lack of integration along the supply chain, and competition from imports.
In the long term, investments in specialized breeds, cooperatives, and access to EU funds can support the development of a competitive beef industry in Romania.
