Lean meat, especially poultry and turkey, plays an essential role in a balanced diet and in the prevention of metabolic diseases. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), moderate consumption of lean meat is associated with a reduced risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.
Nutritional studies show that chicken or turkey breast contains 2–3 times less saturated fat than red meat, while providing a high content of quality proteins and essential micronutrients such as iron and zinc. These characteristics make it recommended for low-calorie diets and for people with metabolic conditions.
Data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS) show that in 2024, poultry meat accounted for 42% of total meat consumption in Romania, confirming consumers’ preference for healthier options. At the same time, domestic production fully meets market demand, which supports the competitiveness of the poultry sector.
In the long run, a shift toward lean meat, combined with nutritional education and diversification of healthy products, could help reduce the incidence of metabolic diseases in Romania.
