Potatoes are one of the most important crops for Romanian agriculture, holding a major share in the population’s diet. According to INS data, potato production in Romania reached approximately 2.8 million tons in 2024, down 3% compared to the previous year.
Average annual per capita consumption was 85 kg, which keeps potatoes at the top of Romanians’ food preferences. However, domestic production does not always manage to cover demand, with imports exceeding 200,000 tons annually, mainly from Poland and Germany.
The main challenges for farmers include high input costs, climate change, and the lack of modern storage facilities. Post-harvest losses can reach up to 20% of production, according to FAO estimates.
For the future, solutions target investments in modern irrigation technologies, storage centers, and the promotion of disease-resistant varieties. Strengthening cooperatives can increase farmers’ bargaining power and competitiveness on both domestic and international markets.
