Poultry meat continues to dominate domestic consumption in Romania, with an estimated level of around 29 kg per capita, according to the latest data published by the National Institute of Statistics. This figure keeps Romania above the European Union average, confirming the steady preference for white meat, which is more affordable and easier to prepare.
Domestic poultry meat production reached over 1.1 million tons in 2024, ensuring a self-sufficiency rate of over 90%. The main producing regions are South-Muntenia and North-East, where large integrated farms also cover the processing segment.
Market conditions have been influenced by feed costs and by the adaptation of farms to new European regulations on animal welfare, which will become mandatory by 2027. At the same time, there has been a slight increase in exports of processed meat to EU member states and the Middle East.
In the medium term, consumption is expected to remain high; however, specialists warn that maintaining competitiveness requires investments in renewable energy, automation, and digital traceability across the production chain.
