Poultry meat consumption has steadily increased in Romania in recent years, to the detriment of pork, which nevertheless remains dominant. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INS), poultry meat consumption reached 27 kg per capita in 2024, up 8% compared to the previous year, while pork remained at 42 kg per capita. The main drivers are the more affordable price, the perception that poultry is healthier, and the influence of modern diets.
The 2024 Eurobarometer shows that 40% of Romanians consider white meat a better alternative for health. In addition, the African swine fever outbreak reduced pork availability and undermined consumer confidence. “Young people in urban areas prefer poultry meat because it is easier to integrate into daily diets and modern eating habits,” said a nutritionist.
For processors, this trend represents both an opportunity and a challenge to diversify their portfolios. In the coming years, the poultry industry is expected to continue growing, supported by domestic demand and export opportunities.
