Berries are gaining ground on both the European and Romanian markets, being associated with healthy diets and rich antioxidant content. According to Eurostat, the European berry market exceeded €9 billion in 2024, with an annual growth rate of 6%.
In Romania, domestic production remains modest, estimated at 25,000 tons, but interest in these crops is increasing, especially in mountain and sub-Carpathian areas. The average annual per capita consumption is 2.5 kg, while imports exceed 40,000 tons, mainly from Poland, Serbia, and Spain. The value of imports reached €70 million in 2024.
For producers, the main challenges include the lack of collection and processing centers, logistical difficulties, and external competition. In the long term, the development of cooperatives, investments in quick-freezing technologies, and organic certification can support export growth and strengthen Romania’s presence on the European market.
