Berries – a High-Potential Segment for Romania’s Agriculture and Food Industry
Berries represent a segment with strong growth potential for Romania’s agriculture and food industry. According to Eurostat data, the areas cultivated with raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries increased by 12% between 2020 and 2024, while total production exceeded 25,000 tons in 2024.
On the domestic market, demand for both fresh and processed berries (juices, jams, frozen products) is rising, especially in urban areas. At the same time, Romanian blueberry exports reached 10,000 tons in 2024, with Germany, France, and Italy as the main destinations.
Berries are valued for their rich content of antioxidants and vitamins. Nutritional studies show that they can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and support immune system health.
For farmers and processors, the main challenges remain the lack of storage infrastructure and price volatility. Investments in collection and processing centers could transform this segment into a competitive export driver for Romania.
