Consumption of exotic fruits in Romania is on the rise, driven by the expansion of retail offerings and the younger generations’ preference for dietary diversity. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS), imports of bananas, kiwis, and avocados exceeded 220,000 tons in 2024, with a value of over €300 million.
Bananas account for more than 60% of this volume, but avocados and mangoes recorded the highest growth rates, with over 20% annually. This trend is linked to the promotion of healthy eating and the integration of exotic fruits into the menus of urban restaurants.
The main challenges for the market are related to high prices and the impact of long-distance transportation on product freshness. At the same time, environmental concerns are leading more and more consumers to seek exotic fruits certified as sustainably produced.
In the medium term, the expansion of distribution networks and diversification of supply can strengthen this segment, which is becoming increasingly attractive to both retailers and consumers.
