The European Green Deal is driving major transformations in the meat industry, and Romania must quickly align with the new requirements. The objectives include a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, with the food industry identified as a key sector.
According to a 2024 European Commission report, adaptation costs for meat processors in Eastern Europe are estimated at €2.5 billion annually. In Romania, challenges are even greater due to outdated infrastructure: only 35% of slaughterhouses currently use modern energy-efficiency systems. The National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) has announced intensified inspections focused on emissions and waste management.
Agriculture Minister Florin Barbu recently stated: “Romanian processors cannot avoid the green transition, but they can turn investments into a competitive advantage.” For the industry, this means additional short-term expenditures, but also access to external markets where imports are conditioned by sustainability standards. A lack of investment could close the door to strategic markets, while proper implementation can secure stable long-term growth.
