The European Green Deal imposes major transformations on the meat industry, and Romania must rapidly align with the new requirements. The objectives aim at reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030, with the food industry being a key sector.
According to a 2024 report by the European Commission, adaptation costs for meat processors in Eastern Europe are estimated at €2.5 billion annually. In Romania, challenges are even greater due to outdated infrastructure: only 35% of slaughterhouses use modern energy efficiency systems.
ANSVSA has announced intensified inspections regarding emissions and waste management. Minister of Agriculture Florin Barbu recently stated: “Romanian processors cannot avoid the green transition, but they can turn investments into a competitive advantage.”
For the industry, this means additional short-term expenditures, but also access to external markets that condition imports on sustainability standards. A lack of investment could close the door to strategic markets, but proper implementation can ensure stable long-term growth.
