Lamb meat occupies a traditional yet fluctuating segment of the Romanian agri-food market. According to INS data (2024), Romania produced approximately 90,000 tonnes of sheep and goat meat, marking a 6% increase compared to the previous year. However, domestic consumption remains highly seasonal, concentrated around the Easter holidays, with an annual average of only 2.5 kg per capita.

Romania holds one of the largest sheep populations in the European Union — over 10 million heads — ranking third after Spain and Greece, according to Eurostat. Despite this, live sheep exports continue to far exceed exports of processed meat, reducing the added value retained within the country.

The main export markets remain Middle Eastern countries (Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait), where demand for fresh Romanian lamb has remained stable. In 2024, exports exceeded €160 million, according to data from the European Commission.

To enhance competitiveness, experts recommend investments in modern slaughterhouses, halal certifications, and the promotion of processed products in EU retail chains. At the same time, farmer cooperatives could help reduce logistics costs and strengthen bargaining power.

Domestically, expanding the segment of chilled, vacuum-packed lamb meat could help extend consumption throughout the year. In the context of Europe’s transition toward sustainable production, extensively raised sheep could become a competitive advantage for Romania due to their low environmental footprint and high nutritional value.

In the long term, Romanian lamb has the potential to become a premium export product, provided that genetic advantages and pastoral traditions are leveraged in line with modern European quality standards.
