Yogurt remains one of the most consumed dairy products in Romania, but the market is undergoing a visible transformation. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INS), Romanians consumed approximately 6.2 kg of yogurt per capita in 2024, a figure stable compared to the previous year.
However, consumer preferences are shifting: low-sugar and protein yogurts are gaining market share, while traditional products such as plain yogurt are losing ground among younger consumers.
Retailers report over 20% growth in the protein and organic yogurt segment, supported by trends related to health and fitness. At the European level, Eurostat confirms that Romania is below the EU average consumption (9.8 kg/capita), but with clear growth potential.
“The Romanian consumer is more open to innovation than a decade ago, yet still maintains a connection to tradition,” notes a study conducted by GfK.
For processors, the key lies in portfolio diversification: maintaining traditional lines alongside innovative, high value-added products. This strategy can ensure both the loyalty of traditional consumers and the attraction of new market segments.
