Watermelons and melons are traditional products of Romanian agriculture, with high demand during the summer season. According to INS data, watermelon production in Romania exceeded 420,000 tons in 2024, up 4% compared to the previous year.

Domestic consumption amounts to approximately 20 kg per capita annually, one of the highest levels in the region. At the same time, Romania has begun to export larger volumes to Central European countries, with export values exceeding 15 million euros in 2024.

The main challenges for farmers remain the lack of storage and transport infrastructure, which leads to significant post-harvest losses. Investments in collection centers and cold chain systems could increase the sector’s profitability and competitiveness.

In the long term, diversifying varieties and expanding cultivated areas can contribute to strengthening Romania’s position in the regional melon market.
