Post-Harvest Losses Threaten Vegetable Sector and Food Security
Post-harvest losses remain a pressing challenge in the vegetable industry, undermining farmers’ incomes and raising concerns over global food security. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), up to 30% of vegetable production worldwide is lost before it ever reaches consumers.
Romania Faces Significant Challenges
In Romania, data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS) indicate that post-harvest vegetable losses can reach 15–20%. The main causes are insufficient storage infrastructure and inadequate transportation. Additional factors such as adverse weather conditions, poor handling, and inefficient packaging further accelerate product deterioration.
Modern Solutions on the Horizon
To tackle these challenges, several innovative measures are being adopted. These include active packaging that absorbs ethylene, IoT sensors for real-time temperature monitoring, and investments in regional cold storage facilities. At the same time, farmer training in post-harvest management practices remains essential to minimizing losses.
Beyond Profitability: A Matter of Sustainability
Reducing post-harvest waste does more than improve farmers’ profitability. It also strengthens food security and enhances the sustainability of the agri-food supply chain, making it a priority issue for policymakers, producers, and consumers alike.
