The organic products market in Romania is expanding rapidly, supported by consumer interest in healthy eating and by European regulations on organic farming. According to Eurostat data, the area cultivated under organic systems increased by 17% between 2020 and 2024, reaching over 500,000 hectares.
Organic fruits and vegetables occupy a central place in this sector, being associated with health benefits and a reduced environmental impact. In Romania, the value of the organic fruit and vegetable market exceeded €120 million in 2024, with an annual growth rate of 10%.
Urban consumers represent the main customer segment, favoring short supply chains and specialized markets. At the same time, online commerce contributes to broader access, while major retailers are diversifying their organic product offerings.
For farmers, the transition to organic farming brings opportunities to access subsidies and dedicated European funds. However, the main challenges remain costly certification and the lack of processing and distribution infrastructure.
In the long term, strengthening cooperatives and investing in marketing could transform the organic segment into a strategic pillar of Romanian agriculture.
