Poultry meat is the most dynamic segment of the meat industry in Romania, accounting for 42% of total meat consumption, according to INS data for 2024. The average annual per capita consumption reached 34 kg, up 5% compared to the previous year.

Domestic production covers over 90% of market demand, making Romania an important player at the European level. However, the poultry sector faces challenges related to high feed costs and EU regulations on animal welfare.

Romanian poultry meat exports exceeded 220,000 tons in 2024, with the main markets being EU member states and the Middle East. The premium segment, such as organic poultry meat and “clean label” products, is gaining ground in major cities.

Looking ahead, investments in sustainability and digitalization will be essential to maintain competitiveness and ensure compliance with increasingly strict European standards.
