The concept of “Clean Label” is gaining ground in the European food market, including in Romania. Clean label meat products exclude artificial additives, synthetic preservatives, and colorants, being perceived by consumers as healthier and more natural.
According to a report by Innova Market Insights, the “Clean Label” product segment grew by 10% annually at the European level between 2020–2024. In Romania, major retailers have started listing more and more of these products, and demand is increasing, especially in urban areas.
For processors, the main challenges are related to maintaining food safety and shelf life without the use of traditional additives. Solutions include the use of natural ingredients with preservative functions (plant extracts, bacterial cultures) and investments in advanced packaging technologies.
In the long term, European standards and consumer pressure will make “Clean Label” a mandatory requirement, not just an option, and companies that adopt these practices early will have a competitive advantage.
