White meat production, especially poultry, is a key sector for Romania’s food industry, but also a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. According to European Commission data, the poultry sector accounts for approximately 8% of total emissions generated by livestock farming.
To reduce the carbon footprint, farmers and processors are adopting measures such as the use of renewable energy, modernization of housing facilities for energy efficiency, and optimization of poultry feed. Studies show that a balanced diet for birds, based on local plant proteins, can reduce emissions by up to 15%.
In Romania, some poultry units have already begun investing in photovoltaic panels and organic waste recycling systems. These measures contribute to the sector’s sustainability and to compliance with European Green Deal regulations.
In the long term, reducing the carbon footprint will become a criterion of competitiveness on the European market, and farmers who adopt these technologies early will gain a strategic advantage.
