In the European Union, food waste represents 20% of all food produced, with the processing industry responsible for approximately 19% of this loss, according to Eurostat.
In Romania, the main causes of processing losses are the lack of efficient recycling flows, inadequate packaging, and overproduction. Spoiled products, surpluses, or technological failures generate losses estimated at over 270,000 tons annually.
Tested solutions: • the use of smart packaging that monitors freshness; • ERP systems that reduce overstock and optimize procurement; • partnerships with food banks and redistribution networks; • processing by-products into biogas or animal feed.
A best practice example: a meat processing cooperative in the Netherlands reduced waste by 43% in two years by integrating AI into demand forecasting and using modified-atmosphere packaging (MAP).
In Romania, a coherent national strategy for the processing sector is needed, one that includes tax incentives, clear reuse standards, and collaboration between industry, authorities, and NGOs.
