Lettuce is a staple horticultural product in Romania, with an estimated average annual consumption of 7 kg per capita, according to INS data for 2024. Its popularity is driven by its association with healthy eating and its integration into urban menus.
Domestic lettuce production is concentrated mainly in the vegetable-growing regions of the south and west of the country. However, during the off-season, Romania remains dependent on imports from Spain and Italy. The value of imports exceeded €25 million in 2024.
Current trends indicate a shift toward packaged salads and ready-to-eat mixes, a segment that grew by 18% in 2024. At the same time, urban consumers are showing increased interest in organic salads, even though they are 20–30% more expensive than conventional products.
For farmers, the main challenges remain the lack of refrigerated storage infrastructure and competition from imports. Investments in modern greenhouses and short supply chains are key solutions for strengthening the domestic market.
