Digital Traceability in the Food Industry: From Farm to Fork

The implementation of digital traceability in the food industry is a necessary response to increasingly strict consumer and regulatory demands regarding product safety and origin. A digital traceability system enables tracking of each product batch from farm to shelf—following the “farm to fork” principle.

According to a 2024 FAO study, 68% of European consumers place greater trust in products featuring digital labels with QR codes that provide information on origin, processing, and transportation.

Blockchain systems, IoT technologies, and integrated ERP platforms are becoming the backbone of modern traceability. These solutions ensure:

• faster response times in case of product recalls; • monitoring of transport conditions (temperature, humidity); • validation of certifications (PDO, organic, HACCP, etc.).

In Romania, major retailers are already requiring the implementation of such systems, while processors adopting digital traceability gain a clear competitive edge. The main challenge remains integrating these solutions into small and medium-sized farms, which will need both technological and financial support.
