Romania’s Fruit Market: Trends and Opportunities
Romania’s fruit market is undergoing significant changes, driven by shifting consumer preferences. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS), the average annual per capita fruit consumption was 68 kg in 2024, up by 6% compared to the previous year.
A Eurostat study shows that over 55% of Romanians prefer local fruits, especially seasonal varieties, which are considered fresher and tastier. This trend is also visible in retail, where supermarkets increasingly emphasize the “Romanian product” label.
However, imports continue to play an essential role, particularly in the off-season, when tropical fruits dominate the market. In 2024, the total value of fruit imports exceeded €700 million, up 12% from 2023.
For farmers and processors, the growing consumer orientation toward local products represents an opportunity to strengthen short supply chains and access funding programs for storage and processing, enabling them to better meet market demand.
