Smart packaging represents one of the most dynamic directions of innovation in the European food industry. Romania, currently modernizing its processing and logistics sectors, has the opportunity to adopt these technologies to enhance product safety and reduce environmental impact.

According to the European Commission, the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) requires that by 2030, all food packaging must be reusable or fully recyclable. Eurostat data shows that only 39% of packaging waste is recycled in Romania, compared to the EU average of 64%, highlighting the urgent need for investment in sustainable technologies.

Smart packaging integrates sensors that can indicate product freshness, transport conditions, or possible contamination. According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the use of these technologies can reduce the risk of food spoilage by up to 30% and extend the shelf life of perishable goods.

At the same time, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that the large-scale adoption of compostable and biodegradable materials could reduce the food industry’s carbon footprint by 25% by 2030. Romanian companies in the sector have already begun collaborating with research institutes to develop packaging based on starch, cellulose, or plant fibers.

The National Strategic Plan (PNS) 2023–2027 includes funding lines for innovative packaging equipment and the implementation of the Deposit-Return System (SGR). Thus, Romania can move from a model based on passive recycling to an active one integrated into the circular economy.

The future of food packaging will be digital and sustainable. Through the integration of sensors, dynamic labeling, and eco-friendly materials, the Romanian food industry can become safer, more competitive, and more environmentally responsible.
