Eco-friendly packaging is becoming increasingly important in the meat industry, driven by European regulations on reducing single-use plastics and by consumer interest in sustainability.
According to a report by MarketsandMarkets, the global market for sustainable meat packaging is expected to grow by 6.5% annually through 2030. Innovative solutions include plant fiber–based packaging, compostable materials, and biodegradable films with antimicrobial properties.
In Romania, meat processors are beginning to adopt eco-friendly solutions, but high costs and the lack of recycling infrastructure remain major obstacles. INS data show that in 2024 only 22% of food packaging waste was recycled.
In the long term, the transition to sustainable packaging will become inevitable, both to comply with regulations and to maintain competitiveness. Companies investing in eco-friendly packaging innovations will gain a strategic advantage on the European market.
