Digital Traceability in the Meat Industry: From Compliance to Competitive Advantage
Traceability is essential in the meat industry to ensure food safety and meet legal requirements. Under Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002, food sector operators must be able to quickly identify the origin of each product batch and track its journey to the consumer.
The digitalization of traceability processes—using blockchain platforms and QR code labelling—enables real-time recording of every stage in the production and distribution chain. According to a Deloitte study, implementing blockchain technologies in the food sector can reduce by 80% the time needed to withdraw a non-compliant product from the market.
In Romania, large processing plants and slaughterhouses are beginning to adopt ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems integrated with digital traceability modules, increasing operational efficiency and reducing human error. In addition, IoT sensors for monitoring temperature and humidity during transport help maintain product quality.
In the medium term, full digitalization of traceability will become a standard driven by both commercial demands and EU regulations, offering a competitive edge to processors who implement it early.
