Beans are among the most consumed legumes in Romania, playing an important role in traditional cuisine. According to INS data, bean production was approximately 75,000 tons in 2024, insufficient to cover domestic consumption.
The average annual per capita consumption is 4.5 kg, but Romania imported more than 50,000 tons of beans in 2024, mainly from Poland, China, and Egypt. The value of imports exceeded 60 million euros.
For farmers, the main challenges are low yields per hectare and high input costs. The solutions include the use of high-performance varieties, the expansion of cultivated areas, and support through national programs and European funds.
In the long term, increasing domestic bean production could reduce dependence on imports and support Romania’s food security.
