Small poultry farms play an important role in Romania’s rural economy, providing jobs and fresh products for local markets. According to INS data, in 2024 there were over 45,000 family farms raising poultry on a small scale.
These farms contribute to production diversification, but they face significant economic challenges. High feed costs, limited access to financing, and difficulties in complying with European standards reduce the competitiveness of this segment.
On average, small farms produce fewer than 5,000 birds annually, which limits their access to the modern retail market. However, the growing demand for local and natural products offers development opportunities through direct sales and cooperative associations.
Public policies that support investments in infrastructure and digitalization can help maintain the viability of small poultry farms and strengthen their role in food security.
