Access to irrigation is a critical factor for the productivity and quality of vegetables grown in Romania. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, only 12% of the utilized agricultural area was irrigated in 2024, which limits the potential of the vegetable sector.

The lack of irrigation affects not only the quantity but also the quality of products, leading to a decrease in vitamin and mineral content. FAO studies show that vegetable yields can increase by 30–40% under proper irrigation conditions.

For farmers, investments in modern drip and micro-sprinkler irrigation systems can reduce water consumption by up to 50%, while ensuring a uniform distribution of nutrients. Accessing European funds dedicated to irrigation infrastructure remains a key opportunity for the development of the sector.

In the long term, expanding irrigated areas could help reduce dependency on imports and increase the competitiveness of Romanian vegetables on both domestic and European markets.
