The cost structure of the European food industry is changing rapidly. Agriculture remains the foundation, but it is no longer the main determinant of the final price. Energy, packaging, and logistics are gaining an increasing share in the cost of processed products, while regulatory pressure is accelerating this shift.

The European food packaging market continues to grow, estimated at tens of billions of dollars and expanding steadily in the coming years, driven by demand for recyclable materials and the development of refrigerated logistics chains. At the same time, logistics costs remain high due to product perishability, seasonality, and the vulnerability of supply chains.

This structural shift is reshaping the real economics of food. Agricultural production remains essential, but value is increasingly created in the industrial and logistical stages. Packaging, transport, and distribution are becoming decisive links in competitiveness.

The European food industry is already one of the largest industrial sectors, with significant investment and capital, confirming the shift in focus from primary production to processing and infrastructure.

In the medium term, food prices will increasingly reflect less the cost of raw materials and more the cost of the industrial system that supports them.
