Reducing food waste: what big retail chains are doing and what really works

Reducing food waste has become a priority for major retail chains in Europe, amid legislative pressure and changing consumer behavior. Retailers are currently testing and implementing concrete solutions aimed at optimizing inventories and making use of products close to their expiration date.

One of the most effective measures is the digitalization of stock management. Sales data analysis enables the adjustment of orders and the reduction of losses from the supply stage. At the same time, dynamic discounts for products with a short shelf life help increase sales and reduce the quantities that are discarded.

Partnerships with NGOs and food banks represent another important tool. Products that are safe for consumption but unsold are redirected to social organizations, reducing environmental impact and supporting vulnerable communities.

Retailers are also investing in consumer education through campaigns on shopping planning and the correct interpretation of labels. European studies show that a significant share of food waste occurs at household level, not only in retail.

However, the effectiveness of these measures depends on collaboration across the entire food chain. Producers, distributors, and retailers must align their processes to avoid overstocking and losses.

Reducing waste is not only an environmental obligation but also an economic opportunity. Retailers that manage to optimize flows and make full use of products reduce costs and strengthen their image as responsible brands.
