Sustainability is becoming an essential criterion for the competitiveness of the meat industry. According to the FAO, the livestock sector is responsible for approximately 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions. In 2024, the European Union introduced new standards on carbon footprint reduction, packaging recycling, and the use of renewable energy in processing.
In Romania, processors have begun investing in photovoltaic panels, waste recovery systems, and sustainable packaging lines. Studies show that 38% of consumers are willing to pay more for products certified as environmentally friendly.
For farmers and processors, adaptation requires significant investments but also provides access to European funds for the green transition. In the long term, compliance with sustainability standards will not only be a legal requirement but also a competitive advantage on both domestic and international markets.
