For farmers and processors targeting the premium market, certification is an essential criterion for differentiation and trust. Labels such as PGI (Protected Geographical Indication), TSG (Traditional Speciality Guaranteed), or organic certification can transform an artisanal product into a brand recognized at the European level. In the case of Mangalița pork, Angus beef, or game meat, these certifications confirm traceability, rearing methods, and compliance with a strict specification sheet.
According to data from the European Commission, Romania has only a few registered meat products with PGI status, which limits competitiveness compared with producers from France, Italy, or Spain. The certification process is complex, involving technical verifications, documentation, and audits, but it can be financially supported through the CAP Strategic Plan (PNS) or rural promotion instruments.
Access to external markets is significantly improved when products carry a recognized certification. Moreover, urban consumers—both local and international—associate certification with guaranteed quality and origin. To advance in this direction, technical support for farmers, digitalized traceability, and strengthened associations of specialized producers are needed.
