Responsible consumption is becoming a central element of the European food market, now analyzed through clearly defined indicators regarding purchasing behavior, consumer information, and perceptions of quality. Eurobarometers of the European Commission show that an increasing number of citizens take into account a product’s environmental impact, origin, and degree of processing before making a purchasing decision. This trend is especially visible among urban consumers with higher education levels and constant access to information.
FAO and OECD note that current preferences are shifting toward products with clean labels, few and transparent ingredients, local origin, and validated quality schemes. These indicators correlate with a growing demand for organic products, geographical indications, and voluntary certifications within the food industry. The role of traceability is becoming essential, and producers are encouraged to provide full transparency regarding supply chains, processing methods, and safety standards observed.
Eurostat reports indicate a steady increase in the share of certified products in the European shopping basket, with a focus on meat, dairy, and minimally processed foods. At the same time, the modern consumer pays increased attention to sustainable packaging, simplified nutritional information, and honest communication from brands. For companies, this means adapting production, labeling, and marketing strategies to an increasingly attentive and demanding public.
In Romania, national surveys show the beginning of a similar shift: growing interest in Romanian products, increased demand for label clarity, and a higher willingness to pay extra for quality and traceability. As a result, the food industry is encouraged to implement higher standards of compliance and communication, aligning with European developments. Responsible consumption is becoming a shaping factor of the market, pushing companies to adapt their production and presentation models to meet a mature, value-oriented demand.
