According to data published by EFSA in 2025, Romania carried out over 11,200 official tests for pesticide residues in food products marketed domestically and for export during the period July 2024 – June 2025. The compliance rate was 96.8%, close to the European average (97.1%).
The most frequently monitored products were apples, tomatoes, peppers, wheat, and grapes. Among these, domestic batches showed a low risk, while some imported batches (particularly from outside the EU) recorded exceedances of MRLs.
The national control system is coordinated by the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA) and ISO 17025–accredited laboratories. These use highly sensitive GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS methods for multi-residue detection.
In 2025, Romania implemented an expanded testing protocol for 185 active substances. Strengthening traceability and training economic operators contribute to reducing risks. In the context of new EU regulations on pesticide use, processors and retailers must remain aligned with the strict compliance requirements.
