Origin labeling has become an essential tool for building trust between producers and consumers. According to the European Commission (2025), over 80% of EU citizens consider it important to know the country of origin of meat products. This demand has led to the extension of mandatory labeling for all types of fresh, chilled, or frozen meat.

In Romania, the implementation of these rules is regulated by the National Authority for Consumer Protection (ANPC) and the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA), which oversee product traceability. Since 2024, retailers have been required to clearly indicate the country where the animals were raised and slaughtered. According to Eurostat, Romania ranks among the EU member states with the highest level of compliance, with over 92% of products inspected meeting labeling requirements.

The benefits go beyond mere information. EFSA studies show that products indicating local origin are perceived as safer and fresher, with sales increasing by 15–20% compared to those lacking clear origin details. At the same time, full traceability helps combat food fraud and enhances accountability throughout the supply chain.

For Romanian producers, the origin label represents an opportunity for differentiation in a competitive European market. Combined with PGI or PDO certifications, it strengthens national identity and supports exports to premium markets.

In the long run, transparency will become not only a legal requirement but also a strategic advantage. In a globalized food economy, trust is built through proven origin and consistent quality — two directions that Romania’s meat industry must turn into pillars of sustainable development.
