The export of Romanian premium meat represents a strategic direction for the higher value capitalization of agri-food resources.

Breeds such as Mangalița, Angus, or Charolaise can meet the demands of discerning markets in the European Union and Asia, provided that strict standards are observed regarding traceability, food safety, and labeling.

According to Eurostat, Romania currently exports limited volumes of fresh beef and pork, but with high unit value when sourced from premium segments. Demand for aged meat, produced through extensive farming systems or from certified native breeds, is rising in France, Germany, Italy, and Japan. Mangalița, in particular, has already become a recognized brand within Central Europe’s gourmet networks.

The main barriers remain inadequate logistics infrastructure, lack of cooperation between farms and processing units, and high certification costs. Moreover, exporting requires precise adaptation to the specific requirements of each market — from grading and cutting style to packaging and localized branding.

Accessing external markets requires an integrated strategy, supported by authorities through bilateral agreements, participation in international trade fairs, and sustained promotion. With a coherent approach, Romania can become a respected supplier of premium meat within European short supply chains and global gourmet circuits.
