The food consumption behavior of Romanians is undergoing a slow but profound transformation. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INS, 2024), the average annual meat consumption has reached 74 kg per person, an increase of 11% compared to 2018, while the consumption of milk and dairy products has risen to 250 liters per person per year, keeping Romania close to the European average.
However, consumption patterns are shifting. The Eurostat – Food Trends 2024 study shows a 20% increase in demand for local and artisanal products, alongside a slight 5% decline in the consumption of red meat. At the same time, premium processed foods and high–value-added dairy products (A2, organic, lactose-free) are gaining ground.
The European Commission highlights that these changes reflect a cultural evolution, not merely an economic one: young consumers prefer authentic products with clear traceability and a reduced environmental impact. For Romanian producers, this represents a major opportunity — provided they can quickly adapt to market requirements and sustainable labeling standards.
The food industry is no longer just about nourishment, but about trust, transparency, and responsibility. The future belongs to those who know how to combine tradition with innovation and turn every product into a story of origin.
